Granddaddy Purple: Everything You Need to Know

Medically Reviewed by: Andrew Bucciarelli, BS, PharmD, RPh

He’s not your average grandfather. Granddaddy Purple, also known as GDP, is one of the most popular indica strains for sleep. Alluring in both color and appearance, GDP has deep purple buds, bright orange hairs, and a generous frosting of white trichomes. It is effective in treating stress, insomnia, chronic pain, and muscles spasms.

Granddaddy Purple’s terpene profile consists of myrcene, caryophyllene, and pinene, giving it an herbal, peppery, and pine taste. We’re breaking down everything you need to know about this popular indica strain. Let’s get started.

History of Granddaddy Purple

Created by Ken Estes in San Francisco, Granddaddy Purple has been incredibly popular since its release in 2003. GDP was born from a need to find a strain that was effective at relieving pain, but also produced an easy-to-grow, high-yield crop. A hybrid of Big Bud and Purple Urkle, its structure is attributed to Big Bud, while its grape and berry aroma comes from Purple Urkle.

Granddaddy Purple is eerily similar to Grape Ape. Some actually believe it’s identical to Grape Ape. However, both are derivatives of Mendocino Purps, which explains their similarities.

Where Does Granddaddy Purple Grow Best?

In addition to its sedating and pain-killing qualities, GDP is known as high-yield, easy-to grow strain. It grows best indoors but can also be grown outside. If grown outside, your climate needs to be warmer, consistently maintaining temperatures in the 70s with humidity between 50-55%. The plant may need additional support when grown outside, as well. The oversized buds make the plant very top heavy, weighing down the plant. Indoors, the plant is short and stalky enough to support itself. If the plant’s frame does begin droop, support the plant with a stake.

Expect to see flowering at 60-plus days. Harvest usually occurs in early October when grown outside. Yields can top four ounces per plant when grown indoors and over three pounds per plant when grown outside.

What Are the Effects From Granddaddy Purple?

In true indica vs sativa style, Granddaddy Purple is indica through and through, with sedating effects, making it ideal for evening and bedtime. Affecting both mind and body, GDP physically relaxes you, while leaving you feeling happy, with some users reporting feelings of cerebral euphoria. About 33% of users also report feeling hungry, which explains why this strain is also effective for treating appetite loss.

Some users do report dry mouth and dry eyes as the more negative effects of Granddaddy Purple. Since it makes users so sleepy, this isn’t a real issue since it you would most likely sleep through any of these effects.

If you are new to GDP, be sure to start slow. This is a powerful strain so a little goes a long way.

Is Granddaddy Purple Effective for Chronic Pain Management?

In short: yes! As mentioned above, GDP was created with effective pain management as one of its primary goals. It is an extremely sedating strain, relaxing your entire body, melting away any stiff muscles or pain. It’s also effective in treating stress, insomnia, appetite loss, and muscles spasms.
