Marijuana in the United States: A Nation Going Green

Hello Solevo Family! As we start to close out such a monumental year for both Solevo Wellness and PA Medical Marijuana patients, we wanted to celebrate what’s going on in our country, as it pertains specifically to cannabis culture.

With that in mind, what better way to celebrate marijuana in the United States than by educating ourselves on how we got to this point?

Did you know that of the 50 states in the United States, 23 of them have legalized medical marijuana and 10 (+ Washington DC) have legalized recreational use? Even though factors such as approved conditions and laws differ from state to state, marijuana in the United States has come a long way over the past decade. Added to a recent influx in pro-marijuana legislature, and the increase in medical research, the legalization of marijuana will be continuing to sweep the nation.

How the Movement Started

Let’s start at “the beginning”. First, in 1996, 24 years after the original introduction of Prop 19, California became the first state to legalize marijuana for medicinal uses under the Compassionate Use Act of 1996. After California, in the years to follow, several other states would come to also pass their own legislature to legalize medical marijuana for specific conditions. Then in the year 2012, Washington state became the first to legalize recreational marijuana use, followed closely behind was Colorado just 4 days later. Finally, as we are about to enter 2019 there are 33 states and Washington DC allowing some form of marijuana consumption, recreational or medical.

Coming to Pennsylvania

Not many people thought that our great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania would become a “green state” so soon. However, for those who have waited for the opportunity to treat their condition with medical marijuana, their turn could not have come fast enough. In 2016, they would see their right to medicate be given to them.

On April 17, 2016 Governor Tom Wolf signed a bill that would legalize medical marijuana in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. To put it briefly, it was a moment so many had been waiting for. After signing the bill, he was quoted as saying…

“I am proud to sign this bill that will provide long overdue medical relief to patients and families who could benefit from this treatment. I applaud members of both parties in the House and Senate who have come together to help patients who have run out of medical options and want to thank the thousands of advocates who have fought tirelessly for this cause.” (1)

Since 2016, Pennsylvania has seen its list of certifiable conditions nearly double in size with a patient base that welcomed the alternative medication with open arms. There are currently 21 certifiable conditions in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, with talks of adding more soon.

In February of this year we opened the doors of the first Solevo Wellness location in Squirrel Hill and began dispensing medical marijuana to patients in and around the Pittsburgh area. Since then we have opened another location in Cranberry Township and have plans to open in Greensburg later this month. Above all, here at Solevo Wellness, we are so happy with how the program is progressing in favor of the patients. We’re not the only ones, it appears our patients are too!

Marijuana in the US as of 2018…

As we prepare to round out the year, we see a United States map that is growing more and more “green”. The way it stands now, 10 states and Washington DC have recreationally legalized marijuana for anyone over the age of 21. Additionally, on the medical side, there are 23 states that are currently legally dispensing medical marijuana to certified patients. Though certifiable conditions vary from state to state, all are dedicated to bringing the best medical marijuana to patients in their areas.
